Things we love...

JUPITER EP

It’s no surprise to us that Philipp Quehenberger has no interest in crowd-pleasing electronics. But he’s always been ahead of his time not just musically, but stylistically as well. Legend has it he made the mustache trend socially acceptable in Vienna two decades ago.

Now the underground artist has teamed up with deep house veteran Peter Czak (aka Peter Zack). Since the late ’90s, Czak has shaped Vienna’s club scene as a DJ, producer, and label head. The result is the EP Jupiter, where deep house meets downtempo—and it’s genuinely a lot of fun.

The EP is available digitally on all major streaming platforms. (Photo: © Stefan Joham)

UNSTOPPABLE!

Pathos, pop, and politics: the House of Austrian History (hdgö) has swiftly declared the glittering universe of the Eurovision Song Contest part of contemporary history. In the exhibition “New Times: Austria Since 1918,” Austria’s historical journey is accompanied by iconic relics such as Conchita’s unforgettable dress from ESC 2014 or JJ’s Wasted Love stage, as well as images from the Grand Prix de la Chanson, which took place in 1967 amid imperial splendor in the Neue Hofburg.

Amid all this, a wonderfully down-to-earth realization emerges: the Song Contest was never just trivial sing-along fluff, but always a loud – and admittedly delightfully tasteless – stage for everything Europe is negotiating at any given moment, from questions of identity to global affairs.

For those who prefer a digital experience, the web exhibition “PROTEST, SCANDALS, POLITICS: 70 YEARS OF THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST” offers a deep dive. Open until October 11! (Photo: © Markus Guschelbauer)

TASTE SICILY

If you’re not in the mood for boring chocolate bunnies this Easter, you might want to fill your basket with a taste of the South instead.

Austrian Andreas Bergbaur (founder of the fashion platform Unit F, later at Jil Sander, Versace, Zegna, Roberto Cavalli, and more) has had enough of fashion and vanity and moved to Sicily. From there, he’s now building a direct bridge between Sicilian farmers and producers and your kitchen table with his new online shop.

On offer: almonds, cheese, pasta, and some of the finest olive oil (our mouths are already watering as we write this).

Anyone who once marketed fashion at an international level knows how to curate desire. Now he’s using that expertise for local businesses that often struggle with exports. Mangiare, ragazzi! (Photo: © Rafaela Pröll) Shop HERE.

FREE GUIDED TOURS AT ALBERTINA

It’s a little sensation in itself: at the Albertina – where tickets aren’t exactly cheap – there’s something on offer for free! On selected dates, you can visit the group exhibition CARE MATTERS for free, including a guided tour.

Curated by Gabriele Schor, the exhibition from the Sammlung Verbund – which houses outstanding works by contemporary and feminist artists – shines a light on something we take for granted in everyday life but rarely gets a stage: care work, and the question of who actually performs it. About 50 works by 32 international and Austrian artists make it clear: the shop doesn’t run itself, gentlemen!

Tours are limited to 25 participants. REGISTER PER MAIL HERE. (Foto: ©Christine Lederer)

SPLATTERHAUS!

First things first: in our opinion, the non-commercial Viennese gallery fjk3 is currently one of the hottest venues for contemporary art in Austria. Under the direction of Fiona Liewehr, exhibitions of truly international quality are shown there – all with a small team and a small budget. Chapeau! For the current exhibition, Liewehr has teamed up with curator Brigitte Huck: the show SPLATTERHAUS! by American artist SCOTT CLIFFORD EVANS (born 1979 in Utah) transforms the gallery into an anarchic ghost train ride somewhere between a film set and a theater stage. A little spooky and quite funny. The show runs until May 10th. (Photo: © Anna Jermolaewa)

FERDINAND GEORG WALDMÜLLER

Anyone seeking a break from the world can lose themselves in the breathtaking landscape paintings of the 19th-century artist. The exhibition is on display at UNTERES BELVEDERE until June 14th. (Photo: ©Elke Walford)

GUSTAVE COURBET

Old but gold: Self-confident and unconventional in his time, Gustave Courbet is known for his revolutionary and sometimes provocative works of realism. The artist's first solo exhibition in Austria can be visited at the LEOPOLD MUSEUM until 21. June. HEATED RIVALRY

Recently launched on HBO Max, Heated Rivalry is a queer ice hockey series about two players whose rivalry turns into a fiery affair beyond the ice.
Series junkies worldwide are already celebrating the show as outrageously good, and even everyone's darling Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of NEW YORK, recommends curling up on the sofa during a snowstorm with the book on which the series is based. Meanwhile, the New York Times named HEATED RIVALRY one of the best series of the past year in its review podcast. The series can be streamed on HBO Max. (Foto: ©Warner Bros. Discovery)

OCTOGONE

French-Iranian artist CHALISÉE NAAMANI (*1995) is presenting her latest exhibition in Austria for the first time, in which she addresses international protests and political resistance. The exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien can be visited until April 6. (Photo: ©Markus Wörgötter)

LOVE ILLUSTRATED BOOK

There is one thing we can all agree on: the world can always use more LOVE. Which makes it especially nice that the third illustrated book by the international photography collective FEMXPHOTOGRAPHERS.ORG, whose release was recently celebrated at FOTO ARSENAL, is dedicated to romantic, platonic and familial love.

Founded in 2018 by artists KIRSTEN BECKEN and VERONIKA FAUSTMANN, the collective has always pursued the goal of increasing the visibility of female photographers. A total of 26 international artists have come together for LOVE. The photographers' images are framed by poetry and text. We’ll take it in a heartbeat! SHOP HERE! (Foto: ©Claudia Holzinger).

SKIN TO SKIN

Norwegian-Congolese artist SANDRA MUJINGA (37) is currently enjoying huge international hype. Following an exhibition at the Stedelijk Amsterdam, she is now bringing her meter-high sculptures to Vienna's Belvedere 21. The exhibition can be visited until May 31. GO CHECK IT OUT! INDIE-POP-ARTIST BENJAMIN AMARU

Right now, we’re all feeling a bit nostalgic. We long for simpler, happier times – and for music that can take us there, if only for a moment. With NOSTALGIA 9052, Swiss musician BENJAMIN AMARU, who has Iranian roots, dedicates an entire album to that feeling. By the way, the number 9052 is the postcode of his hometown. In six dreamy, melancholic indie-pop songs, Amaru revisits the places and moments of his youth. It’s not music that will change the world – but honestly, the air has run out on world-changing anyway! RUTH BECKERMANN COLLECTION OF ALL WORKS BY THE AUSTRIAN FILMMAKER

Okay, we’ll admit it: as much as we love our job, at these temperatures even we can’t be bothered leaving the house in the morning to trudge into the office. It’s just so freezing! Time to ditch those New Year’s resolutions and curl up on the sofa in front of the television instead. And here’s a legit excuse to do just that: the entire collection of works by Austrian filmmaker and social critic RUTH BECKERMANN (*1952) is now available for the frist time.

The set comes with 15 DVDs plus a book, covering all her feature films, previously unseen material, interviews with Ruth herself, plus essays and contributions from her collaborators. Beckermann’s work is all about a deep love for community. From legendary musician LEONARD COHEN, caught singing Yiddish songs in ARENA BESETZT (1977), to intimate snapshots of vanished neighbourhoods in HOMEMAD(E) (2001), to the youthful passion for literature and contemporary history in DIE GETRÄUMTEN.

The complete collection costs €119. Highly recommended! (Photo: ©Ruth Beckermann Shop)

TAROT & TURTLENECK

At the end of last year, an Instagram post briefly sent the internet into a frenzy. It showed JONATHAN ANDERSON, creative director at DIOR, with tousled hair, wearing a black sweater and giving the camera a meaningful look. In front of him was a spread-out tarot deck – very much in keeping with CHRISTIAN DIOR himself, who also had a soft spot for mystical symbolism. The esoteric wave of Gen Z is now also gaining momentum in haute couture. We think: if you're going to read cards, then please do it with style – for example, with the beautifully designed deck by Viennese Secession artist DITHA MOSER (1883–1969). OUR FAVORITE VINYL-CAFÉS

APARTMENT ACHT, still known to many as the record store on Gumpendorfer Straße, is back after a year and a half break, now permanently located in the 15th district at Reindorfgasse 44. Fridays feature new vinyl drops, Wednesdays fresh vintage fashion, plus drinks in the adjoining café.

Since fall, SHH. at Wiedner Hauptstraße 18 in the fourth district has also been adding to Vienna's analog map. Inspired by Japanese JAZZ KISSAS, JÖRG MARKOWITSCH and STEFAN SKOREPA have created a listening bar where soul, R&B, funk, jazz, Latin, beat, and easy listening from the late 1950s to the early 1980s are played exclusively on vinyl. LAST LITTLE HAVEN

LAST LITTLE HAVEN is Viennas first lesbian bar, or rather, a reconstruction of a fictional queer bar from the 1930s to the 1950s, which also serves as an exhibition space. With a beer in hand, you can browse through the world's largest collection of artifacts related to lesbian bar history, including original ashtrays from Mona's Bar in San Francisco from 1930. Behind the project is the core team of TERESA FISCHER, BETTINA WOESS, and MARIE ZAHIR, who spent around a year fine-tuning the implementation. The bar is located at Gumpendorferstraße 68 in the 6th district. (Photo: ©Sophia Süßmilch)

100 YEARS OF AMALIENBAD

To mark the 100th anniversary of the indoor swimming pool, a place of recreation for the working class and a monument to socialist architecture in interwar Vienna (exterior), Viennese photographer MICHAEL RATHMAYR presents details of the beautiful Art Deco splendor inside and, of course, the visitors to this architectural gem in his new photo book. We love! The book is available online, at Softcover Buchladen Wien, Hafi Books, Walther König im MQ, Westlicht, and the Wien Museum Shop. (Photo: ©Michael Rathmayr)

BETWEEN SKI SLOPE AND WHITE CUBE

If you want to combine a winter vacation, the Olympics, and contemporary art in one fell swoop, Bolzano is the place to be in 2026. At MUSEION, the museum of modern and contemporary art at the foot of the Dolomites, the Olympics will be the theme of an exhibition. In WHAT WE CARRY, Viennese artist SONIA LEIMER displays 42 Olympic torches arranged on a tartan track in the shape of an infinity sign.

The installation is complemented by a research project by Vienna-based artist CHRISTIAN KOSMAS MAYER. The project THE LIFE STORY OF CORNELIUS JOHNSON'S OLYMPIC OAK AND OTHER MATTERS OF SURVIVAL takes a critical look at the National Socialist past of the Olympic Games. WHAT WE CARRY is on display until March 29 at MUSEION in Bolzano, Italy. (Photo: ©Luca Guadagnini)

BORSA NERA: VINTAGE BAG CARE

We love them, we hoard them, we caress them, our HANDBAGS—inside them, the traces of our wild lives accumulate: old concert tickets, tear-stained tissues, leaky pens, and sticky drops of all kinds. All the more tragic when, at some point, they look as worn out as you do after a night of dancing. Luckily, there's DAVID MERAN, artist and our EDITOR-AT-LARGE, who not only saves texts, but now also nurses vintage babies back to health. With precision craftsmanship, an artistic eye, and a keen sense of structure, surface, and form, he breathes new life into old favorites. Restored GUCCI, PRADA, and SAINT LAURENT collector's bags (and much more) are also waiting in the shop to find a new home. SHOP HERE! (Photo: ©Johannes Meran)

FASHION YOU CAN HEAR? YES, PLEASE – VISCOSE JOURNAL “SOUND”

We highly recommend VISCOSE JOURNAL – a cool INDIE FASHION MAGAZINE with roots in COPENHAGEN and NEW YORK. Since its founding by JEPPE UGELVIG and FILIP BERG in 2020, the magazine has been consistently rethinking fashion and placing it in unexpected contexts. Previous issues have focused on topics such as SMELL & FASHION and TEXT & FASHION. Each issue features a completely new, detailed design tailored to the respective theme – the current edition, “SOUND”, for example, plays visually with the charm of a vinyl record. LOVE, NOISE & LEATHER JACKETS

With their third album LIEBE BRUTAL, Munich band MOLA brings all their power to the stage and is also stopping off in VIENNA. The album is as uncompromising as its title: between snotty indie pop and—in their own words—“soul that smells of punk leather jackets,” singer ISABELLA STREIFENEDER tells of stumbling, loving, and surviving. Among other things, notable features with Austrian musicians BIBIZA (“viertelnachvier”) and OEHL (“Satt werden”) paved the way for the band's breakthrough. Definitely one to watch! HEASD HAMBURG

“The Best of Vienna” at the Philharmonic now available as an album: Austrian “great poet” ANDRÉ HELLER pulled out all the stops for his 77th birthday: in March last year, he curated his own “REFLEKTORFESTIVAL” at the ELBPHILHARMONIE HAMBURG. For one evening, he asked ERNST MOLDEN to gather “THE BEST OF VIENNA.” The Austrian singer-songwriter and writer took this seriously and traveled there with an illustrious delegation of Viennese musicians: VOODOO JÜRGENS, DER NINO AUS WIEN, MARCO WANDA, TINI KAINRATH, ANNA MABO, URSULA STRAUSS, accompanied by the NEUEN WIENER CONCERT SCHRAMMELN and the FRAUENSORCHESTER. And, of course, HELLER himself—even though he had previously said he would “probably not” sing. But then he did. What a surprise! Now available as a triple LP, double CD, and digitally for you to listen to. ORDER HERE! (Photo: ©Daniel Dittus)

GLOW BY EVA BLUT

Luminous bags, accessories, and gaiters: Being seen is important in Vienna—and with the subline from Austrian fashion designer EVA BUCHLEITNER, who works under the label EVA BLUT, which we highly recommend, this is now also possible in the dark. KNITTING YARN meets NYLON meets FIBERGLASS – and your little festival of lights for on the go is ready! Why all this? Quite simply: safety. And while we're at it, it can be fun too. GLOW also works indoors, for example in clubs. Chic, practical, affordable – we love it! SHOP HERE! (Photo: ©Anna Breit)

80 PORTRAITS: 73 MEN, 7 WOMEN

... and FACES are nowhere to be found. In his book, artist JONAS HÖSCHL works with photographs of right-wing extremists sourced from ANTIFASCIST research platforms. The obscuring of faces strips them of identity – shifting the focus to gestures, clothing, and surroundings. Between ANTIFA ARCHIVES and RIGHT-WING STREETWEAR, a new way of seeing emerges: documentary photography, originally used for identifying enemies, becomes critical art about POWER, visibility, and the AESTHETICS OF HATE. Sing-Along Mania

When even the shyest colleague suddenly believes they’re Freddie Mercury, we’ve clearly landed at a karaoke night. In his book Völlig Losgelöst, Andreas Neuenkirchen tells the story of how a Japanese engineer with only modest singing talent laid the foundation for the global karaoke craze – and why this sing-along fever still drives us today to reveal our innermost selves in a musical (or not-so-musical) way.

Get the pop culture hit HERE.

Wurst Case Scenario

Without mustard, it’s all for the wurst! That’s exactly what Sebastian Hackenschmidt and Stefan Oláh think as well. In their book 95 Wiener Würstelstände, they explore the legendary spots that make Vienna what it is. These stands bring together people from all walks of life—who knows, maybe a Würstelstand would even be the perfect place for political negotiations...? The newly revised edition is available HERE, richly illustrated and seasoned with a dash of Wiener Schmäh.

Every Twelfth Sheep Is Gay

Bad news first: Gay sheep often end up at the slaughterhouse because they don’t reproduce. The good news: Shepherd Michael Stücke rescues them and gives them a happy life on his farm. Together with fashion designer Danny Reinke and Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz, he founded the fashion label Rainbow Wool, which creates clothing exclusively from the wool of gay sheep. Get these colorful statement pieces HERE. And for those with a particularly sheep-savvy heart, you can even sponsor one of the rams.

We love: LIEBEN WIR!

Austrian musician OEHL is about to drop his NEW ALBUM Lieben wir – and since just releasing music would be way too boring, it comes as a bundle with a shirt, postcards, and stickers. Singer Herbert Grönemeyer describes it as:
"Wonderful, cool, and unkitschy German-language pop. Very unique, smart, and artistically special." Pre-order HERE!

BETEIGEUZE

Born in Eisenstadt, BARBARA ZEMAN (*1981) is the shooting star of the Austrian LITERATURE scene. Finally, she has written a new book. In BETEIGEUZED, a GIANT STAR and a mental illness play the main roles. Her colleague Clemens J. Setz and ourselves are thrilled: “Oh dear, Barbara Zeman can write sentences that make your head spin.”

Alpine elegance

Oh sweet baby Jesus!

From November 29, the inside of VOTIVE CHURCH VIENNA will become the scene of ethereal LIGHT and LASER SHOWS with their own specially composed music. Almost every day, it lights up in colors that make Jesus on the cross look even paler. A bit of kitsch, a bit of art – and who knows, maybe the light will also have an effect on LOST SHEEP. Tickets for the 30-minute show are available here. Amen! (Photo: © Fabian Skala)

BIS EINER WEINT – until someone cries

BIBIZA's second album is shaking up the Viennese Schickeria. After EXCESS, party and glamour, we now get a look behind the façade, which leads to the question: How much longer can this go on? Well, until someone cries ... We love the mix of VIENNESE SCHMÄH and deepness! Stream the 21 brand new tracks here. (Cover photo: © Marko Mestrovic)

PIGSTY!

Feng Li documented the CRAZY FAMILY GROWTH photographically and summarized it in his book PIG.

Is it possible to capture the CHAOS IN ONE'S HEAD? Austrian photographer Mafalda Rakos at least gives it a try and does so through a lens. With PORTRAITS, TALKS and ILLUSTRATIONS, she draws our attention to the traces of loneliness and confusion that have emerged especially in times of THE PANDEMIC. A book to browse through, to reflect on – and of course to be happy that we are now allowed to be VERY, VERY CLOSE again. Buy here! (Photo: © Mafalda Rakoš)

MITTELSCHWERE EKSTASE

(Foto: Albumcover)

WEALTH INSTEAD OF CAPITAL – EXHIBITION AT THE ARCHITECTURE CENTER VIENNA

Once a driver of innovation, now often a pawn of capital: architecture can—and should—be more than concrete for profit. ANUPAMA KUNDOO, born in India, shows that there is another way: she designs buildings of extraordinary beauty, which we believe take both people and the planet into account. Kundoo studied in MUMBAI in the late 1980s, opened her first office at the age of just 23, now teaches at renowned universities worldwide, and has exhibited several times at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Now, finally, she is also with us. Women to the front! Exhibition open until February 16, daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.! (Photo: ©Andreas Deffner)

WERNER HERZOG IS NOW AN INFLUENCER

For those who haven't heard yet: the legendary 83-year-old DIRECTOR Werner Herzog, whom we deeply admire, is now on Instagram. Yes, on INSTAGRAM. And because the internet sometimes has good taste, over 550,000 people are already following him. Herzog was recently awarded the GOLDEN LION for his life's work at the Venice Film Festival. If you don't know him yet, you should definitely watch these films: FITZCARRALDO or the documentary MY FAVORITE ENEMY, in which he deals with his difficult relationship with his favorite actor and ECCENTRIC KLAUS KINSKI. Incidentally, TIME listed the Bavarian-born director among the 100 most influential people in the world back in 2009. His Instagram debut? A barbecue. A steak. And Herzog, announcing in a serious voice that he will be giving insights into his private life. SPOILER: It doesn't get that private after all – much of it revolves around his work, of course. But honestly, who needs pet photos when you can have Herzog's unmistakable voice instead? His Bavarian-tinged English alone is a WORK OF ART. Follow him HERE!
