mischer’traxler Studio

Design and Vision

The Viennese designer duo mischer’traxler abstracts, analyzes, investigates, conceives, experiments, tests – and the results are unique multimedia works of art in a design context.

Regardless what they are currently putting their minds to, they explore alternative production processes, create interactive installations and exhibitions, design furniture and products, which often recall objects conceived as a part of a system and are manufactured with unconventional materials.

Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler are researchers and investigative sleuths

They bridge skilled handcraft with the latest technology. Their design methodology is visionary, conceptual and experimental, nevertheless it always acknowledges the given context. Mischer and Traxler are ideal partners, a fact which already has its roots in their student times – both have a degree from the IM master degree program “conceptual design in context” at the Design Academy Eindhoven (NL) in their pockets.

Living Design Objects
In 2009 they founded the design studio mischer’traxler in Vienna. Their works leave a lasting impression. For example, the installation “Ephemera” consisting of plants and mushrooms was commissioned by the French champagne company Perrier-Jouët for Design Miami 2014: It is a spectacle of (artificial) nature in which a mechanical ornamental garden plays hide-and-seek; the plants retract when observers approach; when one steps away, they rise back up again.

Also the most recent interactive installation for Perrier-Jouët plays with the interaction between mankind and natural world. “CuriosityCloud” was presented during the London Design Festival 2015 in the V&A Museum: The installation comprises 264 mouth-blown glass bulbs hanging in a room. Each glass globe contains a single, hand-fabricated insect – referring to an existing species found in nature – which begins to flatter when a visitor comes near.

Works by mischer’traxler can be found at international design and art festivals, in exhibitions and museums, and also in permanent collections such as those of the Vitra Design Museum or the MAK in Vienna. And they have also won prizes for their projects, among others, “the idea of a tree” and “collective works”. In 2011 they were recognized with the “Designer of the Future” award by Design Miami/Basel,  and in 2013 the received the “Young Talent Award” from the BE-OPEN Foundation.
