Porcelain & Design

They’re called AliCE, CaNDY, smarties, or LoVE – sophisticated porcelain collections handmade in Vienna. Since 2005 the product designer Sandra Haischberger has been making “fine things”, and the name of the label says it all.

In the beginning Sandra Haischberger, graduate of the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the London Guildhall University, worked away in a tiny 30-square-meter space including the sales room. In 2014 she left it for a spacious showroom with shop and manufactory located on Margaretenstraße in the heart of Vienna’s 4th district in the immediate vicinity of young, hip designer stores.

In the 340-square-meter complex Haischberger and her team create enchanting tableware, home accessories, and jewelry: a wide range of plates in all sizes, carafes, bowls, coffee and tea services, lanterns, lamps, and fashionable decorative objects in vivid, radiant colors or light pastel tones, with black or natural finishes, with or without platinum or gold décor.

"Our porcelain is fit for everyday use: It is stackable, dishwasher safe, and can be used in the microwave"

Each individual item is poured into a plaster mold, retouched and fired, sanded, polished, and then fired a second time. If decoration is applied, the products land in the oven a third time. With keen eyes for detail, she and her ceramicists forge finely structured, delicate surfaces. The design of the “fine things” is reduced, some collections seem retro, Haischberger aims for a “stylish reinterpretation of the past”.

Furthermore, as Sandra Haischberger explains her design method in the magazine maxima:

“I try to put function before form. I find it particularly important, especially in product design, that the function works and isn’t neglected in favor of the form. Many of our customers are happy that our teapots don’t drip. Our porcelain is fit for everyday use: It is stackable, dishwasher safe, and can be used in the microwave. It should be comfortable and uncomplicated to use.”

Incidentally, nothing goes to waste with Haischberger: The crude porcelain is reprocessed and shaped into RAW lines, a table service made out of 100% recycled material; each piece is unique and has its own vignette. The collections of “fine things” are available across Austria and also in stores in Kuwait, Australia, Japan, USA, and in many EU countries.
